Heading down the Rimutaka Hill on SH2 west of Featherston, just past the 555 meter summit. Though heavy rain limited the views and almost eliminated photo stops, it was a

The first road through the Rimutaka Range opened in 1856 -
that access was crucial for transport of agricultural goods from the fertile Wairarapa plains to the Wellington market.
